KYDEX® Thermoplastics 30th Anniversary
30 Years of Collaboration and Innovation
The KYDEX® Thermoplastics story actually began more than 30 years ago, in 1965, when KYDEX® 100 was invented near Philadelphia at the Rohm & Haas Co. At its outset, this high-impact, fire-rated acrylic-modified PVC thermoplastic sheet was proven ideal for hard-to-form parts for a wide-range of applications including components in aircraft and mass transit interiors. It quickly gained a reputation as an extremely durable, chemical resistant, and fire retardant polymer innovation.
In 1987, the KYDEX® Thermoplastic production assets and the brand name were purchased by a small team of ex-Rohm & Haas employees, who started the Kleerdex Company in Bloomsburg, Pennsylvania. In 1990, the company was acquired by SEKISUI Chemical.
The team who purchased KYDEX® Thermoplastics recognized the profound potential in the product. Their entrepreneurial spirit and unfailing resolve to expand the product line to deliver more than our customers could imagine drove its early success and continues to influence today’s product lines.
Roots in transportation
After the production assets were installed in Bloomsburg, the team worked diligently to quickly expand the portfolio beyond the workhorse KYDEX® 100, which was already widely used by domestic airlines for aviation interior components. In 1990, they invented KYDEX® 6200 for mass transit interior components to meet newly-established low smoke regulations set forth by the Federal Transit Administration.
Soon after, the aviation portfolio grew with KYDEX® 657 and KYDEX® 6565 to meet and exceed the Federal Aviation Administration’s (FAA) more stringent regulations for heat release and smoke density.

Innovation through process
Excellence in manufacturing, customer service, and design are just a few foundations that have made KYDEX® Thermoplastics a success. Through its early adoption of Kaizen methodology and continuous improvement, the company has always provided best-in-industry lead times and low minimum order quantities. In 1993, KYDEX, LLC was one of the first plastic manufacturers in North America to achieve ISO 9001 certification.
Innovation through design
Since its early days, KYDEX® Thermoplastics were known for having refined, integral color. The original nine-color palette quickly grew to 33 standard colors, and now includes over 4,000 library colors with virtually unlimited color matching capabilities. Over the decades, design capabilities have grown with the addition of decorative lamination and light-reflective pigments. With the recent addition of pattern-in-product with Infused Imaging™, design options are more far-reaching than ever before.
The sky's the limit with collaboration
Collaboration with our partners and inspiration from other industries have engendered development of new technologies, products, and applications. Today, KYDEX® Thermoplastics are virtually everywhere, from the planes in our skies to devices in your doctor’s office.
At the SEKISUI SPI designLab™, customers work with design and R&D teams on color and finish to begin, refine, or extend a design. Making the world safer is the focus in our FSTLab™, where we collaborate with suppliers, engineers, and end users on developing fire-resistant materials.
The first 30 years of KYDEX® Thermoplastics have been an inspiring journey. We’ve been most fortunate in our relationships and resources and are grateful to our customers, employees, and ownership. The future certainly looks bright for building on that legacy together for the decades to come.

When SEKISUI became the first Japanese company to establish operations in the U.S. fifty years ago, they had great aspirations for their business.
SEKISUI Polymer Innovations stands today as a successful result of what two cultures, united in a common goal, can achieve. At the core of our business model are two fundamental constants: Our mindset to continually improve our manufacturing quality through proven, rigorous Japanese processes (Kaizen, Monuzukari, etc.), and our commitment to educate and inspire our customers – rather than sell them.

Did You Know...
SEKISUI SPI thermoplastics are 100% recyclable – making them a sound investment for your company AND the environment.
Our Optimized Manufacturing Processes
We always work to limit the environmental impact of our sheet manufacturing, by optimizing our processes to increase yield while reducing waste.
- In the mixing and extrusion processes, Kaizen projects are constantly identified to continuously improve material yield, and computerized process control is used to reduce waste
- In our internal recycling process, out-of-specification product is re-extruded and then reused as raw material.
- Waste flows and material recovery opportunities are routinely identified at all manufacturing facilities.
Did You Know...
During the winter, heat produced in the manufacturing process is recycled to heat our manufacturing facilities.
Protecting Our Natural Resources
Air – By using clean energies such as electricity in the manufacture of thermoplastics, insignificant particulate matter or carbon dioxide is emitted from the production process into the air.
Water – During the manufacture of SEKISUI SPI thermoplastics, we limit the use of water for processing; in fact, water never comes in contact with the process. Where water is used, it is recycled internally, and no surface water is discharged.
Energy – At two of our three facilities, raw material is shipped to us in rail cars to minimize fuel consumption.
Making Sustainable Products
Our thermoplastic sheets require lower processing temperatures when compared with most other polymers in the industry. This translates into lower energy consumption, that when combined with high-efficiency motors and sophisticated temperature controls allow us to create high quality products that are also very energy efficient.
We Hold Our Facilities to the Highest Standards.
Our manufacturing operations and R&D facilities are certified to the ISO 14001:2004 environmental management system, as well as the ISO 9001:2008 quality management system. Our commitment to the ISO 14001:2004 standards ensures that SEKISUI SPI complies with applicable laws and regulations while minimizing how our operations affect the environment.
ISO 9001:2008 / 14001:2004
We practice and honor above and beyond best practices for our industry, business and planet.
Why? We agree with the International Standards Organization and practice Kaizen.
ISO 9001:2008: Quality management system
ISO 14001: 2004: Environmental management system
The ISO 9000 and ISO 14000 families are among ISO's (International Organization for Standardization) most widely known and successful standards ever. ISO 9001:2008 has become an international reference for quality requirements in business-to-business dealings, and ISO 14001:2004 looks set to achieve at least as much, if not more, in helping organizations meet their environmental challenges. ISO 9001:2008 is concerned with "quality management." This means what the organization does to enhance customer satisfaction by meeting customer expectations and applicable regulatory requirements, continually improving its performance in this regard. ISO 14001:2004 is primarily concerned with "environmental management." This means what the organization does to minimize harmful effects on the environment caused by its activities, and continually improving its environmental objectives.
- Customer focus
- Involvement of people
- Process approach
- System approach to management
- Continual improvement
- Factual approach to decision making
- Mutually beneficial supplier relationships
Kaizen is Japanese for "improvement" or "change for the better." We can always do better. It's what fuels us, no matter our place in our ecosystem.
